The 0 series was the first commercial Shinkansen train to appear in 1964.

The 1000 series, which appeared in 1976 and had small side windows, were added to replace the earlier cars that were mixed in within the trains, so some cars with large windows remained within the trains, and the 'Hikari' trains with dining cars attached were called NH trains.
